This film documents the first session of the Bertha Lutz Tribunal. Named after one of the pioneers of Brazilian feminism, the Tribunal was created to consider cases of discrimination against women. This session, which took place in Sao Paolo in 1982, dealt with the case of a woman worker who, after working in a factory for several years, accused her employer of wage discrimination. Other women who testified in this film include a number of artists, celebrities, union representatives and rural and urban workers.

Every week, a group of poor women living in an outlying district of Santiago get together to talk. This audiovisual focuses on the sessions in which the women discuss their sexuality, considering first the roles that society assigns them - mother, wife and housekeeper - and their own bodies and feelings, shrouded in myth, taboos and ignorance. Next the women discuss why they do not experience pleasure during sex - economic difficulties, lack of privacy, machismo, alcoholism, the kind of education they have received. In the third part the women let their imaginations run free with the help of mental and physical relaxation exercises.

This film explores the widespread sterilization of women in Puerto Rico, where over one-third of all women of childbearing age have been sterilized and the average age of sterilized women is 26. So common is this method that it is simply known "la operacion" (the operation). This long overdue film carefully and comprehensively analyzes the social, economic and political context of population control policies carried out by the Puerto Rican and U.S. governments. It examines how U.S. policies in Puerto Rico have transformed the economy, leaving more and more Puerto Ricans poor and unemployed. It is this group of people that has been the target of population control in the island. The film also points to the role of the medical profession and the conditions in women's lives that motivate them to submit to this irreversible method of birth control at an early age.

The Latin American Women's Movement: Reflections and Actions
The last 15 years have seen the emergence of a remarkably strong and diverse Women's movement in Latin America.
In this, our fifth issue of the Isis International Journal, women activists from countries as different as Chile, Uruguay, Peru and the Dominican Republic relate their organizing experiences and reflect on some of the key issues effecting women and feminist progress throughout the region. We learn about the Manuela Ramos Movement's experiences of co-ordinating training programs with poor women in the shanty towns of Lima, Peru; of the history of a feminist publication group in Mexico; and of how women in Uruguay and Argentina have taken advantages of recent moves towards democracy. ,
Together with analysis of the movement's more general development "since the 1970s, these accounts provide an important contribution, not only to our understanding of feminism in Latin America but to our perceptions of women's struggles worldwide.
An extensive list of Latin American women's groups, centers, services, publications and audiovisuals, ending with a bibliography of books in English, is also included.
