Women's information and communication service
Women all over the world are mobilizing and organizing, sharing experiences, ideas and information, analysing and reflecting on women's lives and situations, supporting each other and building links of solidarity as they work to overcome discrimination and oppression and to create more justice for women. The women's movement has created a wealth of resources, media, and networks. Isis International is contributing to building and strengthening these networks and the flow of information among women around the world by promoting women's international communication.
Resource Center
Our information and communication service is based on a network of over 10,000 contacts in 150 countries of the world and a resource center with thousands of documents ~ magazines, newsletters, journals, studies, papers, posters, pamphlets - from all over the world. Based on the network and documentation built up by Isis during its ten year existence (1974-1983), these resources continue to grow week by week. We regularly receive 600 periodicals, collect books and information on audiovisuals and especially pamphlets, papers and other materials from the women's movement which are not usually found in libraries or other collections. They cover the whole range of issues women around the world are concerned about and working on: health, development, employment, multinationals, housework, child care, food production, tourism, prostitution, media, communication, sexuality, peace, education, racism, sexism, feminism, women's participation in politics, the mobilization and organization of women. All these materials are sent in by individuals, groups and organizations in our network. It is your efforts that have made it possible for Isis International to place this unique collection of resources at the service of the global women's movement.
Networking and Communication
We use these materials in our resource center to provide information and communication services to those in our network. We pass on the ideas, experiences, reflections, analyses, appeals for support and solidarity, news, information, models for organization and action, resources to other women around the world through the Isis International Women's Journal and Supplement and through resource guides. Ideas for organizing, information to help us answer our needs and desires which would never reach us through the mass media are communicated from one women's group or network to another.
We also answer requests for information, making special efforts to put women in touch with others working on the same or similar issues. Women also come to the resource center to use the materials, where we compile information packets, bibliographies and background papers, such as the one on Women's Alternative Health Information and Networks, prepared for the First Regional Women and Health Meeting in Latin America, May-June 1984.
