Non-Sexist Child Development Project

Zimbabwe Publishing House Women's Series

Created in 1981 as part of the Latin American Institute of Transnational Studies (ILET), the Women's Unit contributes to the creation of alternative media to counteract the perpetuation and dissemination of traditional stereotypes of women. It also distributes information which helps women to answer those questions affecting our daily lives, problems and needs. Activities of the Women's Unit include: Mujer-Ilet: a monthly publication of newsclippings and features from FEMPRESS; Mujer-Especiales: a quarterly dossier collecting articles on specific issues of interest to women; Women's Alternative Media Collection: pamphlets about women's alternative media in Latin America; and Radio Network: a collection of radio programmes produced by Latin American women.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

An action and advocacy group, Mujer-Tec promotes community action through the media. It aims to train women in non-traditional jobs in communications, and encourage research that analyses, evaluates, and recommends changes in the field of communications as that field relates to women's struggle for equal participation in Dominican society. A Research Centre for Women's Action, CIPAF is a source of alternative media for women. Using cartoon style booklets, CIPAF produces a series of materials dealing with the lives and problems of women workers in factories, the fields and in the household. It raises issues of the sexual division of labour, discrimination and harassment on the job. It also conducts research and seminars.

It has conducted several workshops with development, activist and women's groups on alternative communication — methods, messages, and techniques.

In addition to general video programmes on development CENDIT has produced several programmes on women's issues. Kali For Women is a professional, non-profit society, concerned primarily with publishing Third World studies on women. Its objective is to increase the body of knowledge on women in the Third World, to give voice to such knowledge as already exists, and to provide a forum for women writers, creative and academic. It has initiated various publishing programmes aimed at producing reasonably priced published material in the social sciences and humanities, general non-fiction, and fiction. Kali also intends to publish literacy and post-literacy material produced by women for women.

SRI LANKA

Voice Of Women

Kantha Handa (Voice of Women) is a group of women who have been active since 1978. They publish Voice of Women — a journal for women's liberation — in Sinhala, Tamil and English as a quarterly. They provide documentation and library services on women's issues. In September 1983, Kantha Handa began Colombo's first Women's House to help women displaced in the ethnic riots of July 1983. Kantha Handa also organises seminars, symposia and workshops on women's issues, and have published a survey on women workers in Free Trade Zones.

PAKISTAN

Women's Action Forum

A women's group that is involved in campaigning against sexist laws in Pakistan, WAF organises seminars, mass meetings, consciousness-raising campaigns. It is involved in experimenting with alternative media forms and works through the use of film, cassettes and theatre towards improving the image of women in the media. WAF is also working to create women's solidarity nationally and internationally.
