Although women are the majority of the world's food producers, it is only since International Women's Year in 1975 that FAO has given significant attention to the needs and situations of rural women. Most programs and research on women have been, and continue to be, channeled through the nutrition division, which has made considerable efforts to aim its programs toward women and to improve their access to the food. The Freedom from Hunger Campaign/Action for Development is another FAO program which has given attention to women and produced useful material on this issue.

In 1978, the centre began to distribute videotapes by women outside the group, and in 1981, added a number of films by women artists to their collection. The centre also organizes other events related to women and the arts such as workshops and presentations, performances, video and film screenings, and exhibits using many other visual art forms.
