ISIS is an international women's information and communication service, with a resource and documentation centre. It was established in 1974 in response to demands from women in many countries for an organisation to facilitate global communication among women and to gather and distribute internationally materials and information produced by women and women's groups.
Over the years we have built up an extensive pool of documentation and information comprising:
• a network of 10,000 contacts in 130 countries.
• 50,000 items - periodicals, newsletters, pamphlets, books, manuscripts, information about films, projects, groups - by and about women from all over the world.
The information covers a vast variety of topics from health, education, food, nutrition and appropriate technology to communication, media, violence against women, employment, and theories of feminism
From this wealth of information ISIS provides many services:
* Direct information services in answer to written and telephone requests, on any aspect of the women's movement internationally and topics of concern to women in different parts of the world. Our users include school students, university students and graduates, professional women, planners and producers of television and radio programmes, women's groups, church organisations, national and international organisations, and non-governmental organisations. Visitors come to our offices to do research or consult our information. We also refer our users directly to other groups and resources.
* ISIS Women's International Bulletin in English and Spanish: a quarterly publication bringing together documentation on themes of particular concern to women, reflecting action and resources from around the world. Among the themes covered since No. 1 was published in 1976 are: health, the mass media, violence against women, nuclear power and militarization, women, land and food production, migrant women, tourism and prostitution, women in national liberation movements.
* ISIS News Service: a monthly news bulletin of all the latest women's events, comments and activities in different parts of the world, distributed through an international wire service to developing countries, to women's groups and publications in many parts of the world.
* Resource Guides are more in-depth publications on certain subjects. Three Guides published to date are: Bottle Babies - a guide to the baby food 0 issue, the International Women and Health Guide, and the Resource Guide g on Women and Development.

Packets 01 and bibliographies are on very specific themes of burning concern to S. women, such as women and peace, aging, the new technology, films I any issue where groups, individuals and organisations need collected (J information rapidly for conferences, seminars etc.
*The International Feminist Network (IFN) which mobilizes international support for women who are being persecuted on the grounds of their sex. Recent cases for IFN support have included women political prisoners in Brazil, and a women's centre threatened with closure in India. This service is open to all women everywhere.
* Technical assistance in communication skills and information management. Many women's groups starting information/documentation centres request our skills in helping them set these up. Others ask for help in publishing, layout, editing and networking.
* Training at our offices in women's communication, information management, publishing and research. Each year two or three women from different parts of the world work with us on some aspect of women's communication.
* Exchange programme for women activists to live for a time in another culture, learning and sharing skills in areas of crucial concern to women such as health, legal aid, crisis centres, communication, agriculture.
* Conference organisation. In June 1981 ISIS organised jointly with the Women's Health Centre of Geneva, an International Women and Health meeting in which 500 women from nearly 40 countries attended.
ISIS is an independent, non-profit organisation financed by subscriptions and sales of its publications, and by donations from women's groups, non-governmental and development organisations. The work is carried out by an international team of women from four continents.
