Women Against Racism, USA

The Women Against Racism Committee, in conjunction with the Women's Resource and Action Center of the University of Iowa announces: Parallels & Intersections — a Conference on Racism and Other Forms of Oppression, on April 6-9,1989 in Iowa City, Iowa. "Parallels & Intersections" is a four-day conference in which the multiple forms of oppression which affect all human beings will be explored, analyzed and challenged. Racism, classism, heterosexism, anti-semitism, sexism, ableism, ageism, are just some of the labels we have developed to express the dynamics of how we define others and define ourselves in our daily discourses and behaviors. Participate by organizing a panel, conducting a workshop, or presenting an academic paper. Bring your music, your poetry, your performance, your book exhibit. Share your struggle with people from all over the country.

The conference will address issues of oppression from three different yet complementary perspectives: Academic Presentations, where scholarly analyses on issues of oppression will be presented. Community Organizing, in which individuals and groups can share experiences and strategies. Personal Work, in which we challenge, at the individual level, the misinformation we receive about ourselves and others. We are committed to the idea that accessibility is best achieved by having no registration fee. However, participants are encouraged, if possible, to contribute through a personal or organizational donation. Checks should be made payable to: c/o Women Against Racism Committee, 130 N. Madison St., Iowa City, la. 52242 USA. For more information call (319) 335-1486.

The conference hopes to encourage the search for common objectives and the coordination among different groups that are engaged in health activities such as abortion, new reproductive technologies, DES and health networks.

The conference will provide an open forum for debates and workshops, according to the varying needs and priorities of the participants.

Four major areas are proposed:

  • Feminist analysis and criticisms of health policies
  • Women's views about health issues
  • Experiences and activities
  • Common objectives and means of strengthening coordination and solidarity.

Translations into English and Spanish languages wull be provided. For other languages, solutions will be sought amongst the participants.

After the conference, a workshop on DES will be organized by the DES Action Group on July 26 and 27. Interested participants are invited to join, especially the participants to the First European DES Conference in Brussels last June.
