In June 1988 Isis International launched a special project on violence against women in Latin America and the Caribbean, with support from the United Nations Development Fund for Women, UNIFEM.

The project surveyed violence against women in the region, categorized its forms and identified the kinds of activities groups and institutions arc working on to combat it.

Isis hopes that this overview will contribute to the development of proposals, policies and concrete activities to put an end to this violence.

The sources of information used in this survey were:

  • Documentation already available on the subject of violence against women;
  • A questionnaire answered by 109 government, non-government and academic organizations from twenty two countries;
  • Attendance at meetings related to the subject.

The project produced three published volumes: a final report, a directory of programs working to combat violence against women and a bibliography.

The three volumes offer a rich source of information on the subject which should be useful to any person or group interested or involved in the problem of violence against women.

Directory of Programs

This Directory of Programs gives a description of 109 programs dedicated to the problem of violence against women in the region, and gives a picture of the governmental, non-governmental,academic and international organizations that are working, from different perspectives, on this area.

The programs are grouped according to country, kind of work and type of institution.

The main aim of the directory is to identify the areas of work, activities, materials, resources and information that institutions and groups have access to in order to produce policies, legislative and preventative measures, actions and services.

It is available only in Spanish.
